Simple Directions

When in doubt you are heading for a small town (Murphys) just east of Angel's Camp on Highway 4.

From the Bay Area, head East on Highway 4. (You can access Highway 4 from Interstate 5 (via 580) just north of Stockton). Take the last highway 4 exit, East to highway 99 and then follow the signs to highway 99 South for a very short jog before you take 4 east on the Farmington Road/4 exit (Stay in the right lane).

Once you get to Angel's Camp, keep going on 4 through town and proceed east at the left turn at the end of town. After about 7 miles, just before the main turn off for Murphys you will see Pennsylvania Gulch Road on the Right. Turn right and follow the road to The Barn, on the left across the street from Indian Rock Winery, one of the many fine wineries in the area. Indian Rock has good wines, a nice picnic area overlooking the vineyards and a pond with ducks.

Calaveras County is one of the emerging wine regions in California. In the last few years, this area has turned into a true "wine country" destination. There are over 20 wineries in and around Murphys alone. Winemaking in the Sierra foothills goes back to the Gold Rush days and now features some fine varietals not found in the Coastal vineyards as well as old vine Zinfandels and Cabernets.

Most of these wineries do not charge for tasting and many have nice places to sit and eat or just enjoy the ambience of the vines. If you are tired of the expense and crowded conditions in Napa and Sonoma, you will enjoy a trip to a wine country the way many of us remember from 30 years ago in Napa/Sonoma. My favorite- Lavender Ridge. French Rhone varietals by a master vinter, Rich Gilpin. His tasting room and many others are right on Main Street in Murphys.
